Tarambel Fortified House in Cogne Valley

Tarambel fortified house, in local patois Tor de Mougne, is a legendary medieval ruin located between the villages of Epinel and Crétaz.The fortified house was built in 1198, probably by the Chésallet family ( the Sarre – Cogne branch), but was given to the Bishop of Aosta about a century later. It subsequently passed into the hands of the Moni family (then called Mogni). They were faithful to the prelate and represented the fief of Epinel, administering the area on behalf of the Bishop. At some point a village called Tarambel, made up of two separate areas – Croix and Mogni – formed around the fortified house, but it is no longer to be found today.
